I had dinner at a Dominican restaurant last night. A separate page in the menu featured a listing of mofongo dishes. Evidently, Sunday is mofongo night.
Mofongo... Mofongo... Where had I heard of it before? Did Anthony Boudain mention it on his Puerto Rico episode? If so, did he like it? Maybe that's not much of an endorsement. The guy loves entrails and organ meat after all.
The menu helped by explaining mofongo is made from plantains, garlic and pork cracklings. I love plantains. And garlic. And most things pork.
I watched live Caribbean baseball while my order was being prepared. Baseball in January. Hello to a different world.
The mofongo was wonderful. The perfect thing for a chilly winter night. You'd think it would be a bit heavy in tropical weather, yet that's where it was invented. I'll have to try some during our hot, humid summers.
